What is a private email server?
All email has to “live” somewhere. An email server stores, sends, and receives the messages. It is a computer configured for this purpose that is connected to the Internet. A private email server is one that you own or is dedicated for your domain name(s) and email addresses. Most email is handled by some commercial email provider. That provider may be using automated software to read your email. That may happen so that they can target you with specialized advertising or some other purpose. You have little control over how a third party may share or use the information. If a private entity or domestic or foreign government agency seeks your email, will it be handed over without a subpoena? Perhaps so.
Never consider email to be completely private. Anything that exists on the Internet is accessible by anyone who has the authorization or the tools to hack the system. There are other steps one can take to increase security, such as encrypting emails. Having a private email server provides you extra security and control over your data.
